Angeninge community-based drama group

This Tanzanian theatre group brings messages and information about community matters to towns and remote villages in northern and coastal Tanzania. The information is imparted  in the form of drama, dance and music theatre.  Community drama works and is one of very few ways to effectively educate illiterate people in these extremely remote areas.

Angeninge means: “if we had known about these things we wouldn’t have done them”

The Group was formed in 1994 in Pangani, a small town of 7000 people on the coast of Tanzania. They were trained at Bagamoyo College of Arts to write, produce and perform plays to the community to educate them about social issues, especially the prevention of HIV and AIDS. They now perform as often as funding will allow in Pangani town and the 33 villages (total population 44000) of Pangani District and with help from Community Projects Africa they have performed in other parts of Tanzania.  CPA has been supporting Angeninge for 4 years.   CPA has  financed:-

  1. A week long tour to Kilimanjaro Region in March 2005 where they performed in several villages.
  2. Performances of one play in all 33 villages of Pangani District.
  3. The building of an office/storeroom in Pangani, which has an attached stage where they now rehearse and perform. They are now using the building to generate a small income for themselves. Angeninge is about local people helping themselves.

Angeninge are now looking for funding for the following projects:

  1. Performing a different play in the 33 villages of Pangani District.
  2. Twice monthly performances in Pangani town on their own stage.
  3. Another tour around Arusha, Msohi and Kilimanjaro, where they were so well received in 2005.
  4. Accumulating a fund to provide for the running expenses of Angeninge for the future.
  5. Purchasing a second hand vehicle to transport the group plus props to performances

A little goes a long way – you can be sure  that your contribution has saved lives.
