Calabash Trust
In 1999, Calabash Tours had been established for two years. Many tourists from around the world had experienced tours into the townships around Port Elizabeth and engaged with children and adults in these poverty stricken neighbourhoods.
Often these visitors felt moved to make a donation to schools, but this was done in an unstructured way. In 1999, Marion Gate, took a township tour with Paul Miedema. Marion had recently arrived in Port Elizabeth from Scotland and she was so moved by the dire need she saw, that after a couple more tours she wanted to get involved in long term development with the children.
She proposed to Paul that they form a Trust in order to manage the donations and direct the money into projects that would make a real difference to the future of the children. And so the Trust was formed, with Paul Miedema as Chairperson and Marion Gate as Trust Manager.
