Sharing Information With Your Estate Planning Attorney

If you decide it's time to start drafting your estate plan, you'll need to arrange a meeting to talk with an estate-planning lawyer. There will be a time when the meeting between you and your estate planning lawyer could be uncomfortable or personal and you believe that you shouldn't divulge all the details and keep some from being revealed.

The decision to keep information hidden could compromise the plans for your estate, however. Your estate plan can only be dependent on the amount you give to your estate planning lawyer.

Your attorney is able to make plans based on the information that they receive. The lawyer creates the plan to manage your affairs based on the wishes of the client, as well as the information the client decides to disclose.

If there are objectives the client has in their estate plan but chooses not to reveal them, the attorney may not be in a position to create plans to accomplish the objectives.

The attorney must adhere to a strict code of confidentiality when the client relationship is established. That means the lawyer can't divulge any confidential information you decide to divulge to them.

The most intimate family secrets and issues that aren't appropriate to share with your family members or the general public are kept between the client and the attorney and remain private even after you pass away.
